Who Can Reach The Last 16?

There is just one round of group games left, so who can still reach the Last 16? Two places have already been taken by Brazil and Japan, and as well as the group winners and runner-ups qualifying, the four best third-placed sides will also reach the Last 16.

Group A

Country P W D L F A GD Pts
Canada 2 1 1 0 1 0 1 4
China 2 1 0 1 1 1 0 3
Netherlands 2 1 0 1 1 1 0 3
New Zealand 2 0 1 0 0 1 -1 1

Final Fixtures:

Netherlands vs Canada (Monday 15 June)

China vs New Zealand (Monday 15 June)

Qualification Status

All four teams still have a chance to qualify as it is likely that four points will be enough for a country to secure a best third-placed team.

Canada is top of the group and know a draw will secure one of the top two positions, whilst the draw should secure Netherlands at worst third-spot. New Zealand must beat China to have any chance of qualifying, whilst China will know a point will secure them second spot.

Who Will They Face?

First vs Best Third Placed Team from either Group C, D or E.

Second vs Second Group C (most likely Cameroon or Switzerland)

Third vs EITHER First Group B (Germany or Norway) or First Group C (most likely Japan)

Group B

Country P W D L F A GD Pts
Germany 2 1 1 0 11 1 10 4
Norway 2 1 1 0 5 1 4 4
Thailand 2 1 0 1 3 6 -3 3
Cote D’Ivoire 2 0 0 2 2 13 -11 0

Final Fixtures:

Thailand vs Germany (Monday 15 June)

Cote D’Ivoire vs Norway (Monday 15 June)

Qualification Status

The only team that is nearly definitely out is Cote D’Ivoire, who with their poor goal difference and 0 points, they won’t get a best third-place spot. Germany and Norway will most likely finish top two places unless Thailand pull of the biggest shock in World Cup History by beating Germany. The main question is who will finish top of the group, where Norway will have to overcome a six-goal difference to do so.

Who Will They Face?

First vs Best Third Placed Team from either Group A, C or D.

Second vs Second Group F

Third vs EITHER First Group C (most likely Japan) or First Group D

Group C

Country P W D L F A GD Pts
Japan 2 2 0 0 3 1 2 6
Switzerland 2 1 0 1 10 2 8 3
Cameroon 2 1 0 1 7 2 5 3
Ecuador 2 0 0 2 1 16 -15 0

Final Fixtures:

Ecuador vs Japan (Tuesday 16 June)

Switzerland vs Cameroon (Tuesday 16 June)

Qualification Status

Japan have already reached the last 16 and you would expect them to beat Ecuador who has shown defensive naivety in both their matches. So all the attention will be on Switzerland vs Cameroon, and whoever will win that will finish runners-up. Switzerland has the goal difference advantage, and although a draw would potentially see them both through, Cameroon will want to win it. This will be a fantastic encounter between two sides with great attacking desire.

Who Will They Face?

First vs Best Third Placed Team from either Group A, B or F.

Second vs Second Group A

Third vs EITHER First Group A or First Group B (Germany or Norway)

Group D

Country P W D L F A GD Pts
USA 2 1 1 0 3 1 2 4
Australia 2 1 0 1 3 3 0 3
Sweden 2 0 2 0 3 3 0 2
Nigeria 2 0 1 1 3 5 -2 1

Final Fixtures:

Nigeria vs USA (Tuesday 16 June)

Australia vs Sweden (Tuesday 16 June)

Qualification Status

The Group of Death has lived up to its reputation with Nigeria’s 3-3 draw with Sweden a contender for game of the tournament. USA sit in pole position on 4 points, but will face a Nigerian team full of energy and attacking threat. Meanwhile, Sweden needs to beat Australia who was unlucky to lose against USA, and blunted Nigeria’s attack in a 2-0 win. USA should already have secured a third-best position, whilst Australia know a win will guarantee them a top-two finish. Nigeria and Sweden have to win to have any hope of reaching the Last 16. These two games are going to be incredible.

Who Will They Face?

First vs Best Third Placed Team from either Group B, E or F.

Second vs First Group E (Brazil)

Third vs EITHER First Group A or First Group B (Germany or Norway)

Group E

Country P W D L F A GD Pts
Brazil 2 2 0 0 3 0 3 6
Costa Rica 2 0 2 0 3 3 0 2
Spain 2 0 1 1 1 2 -1 1
South Korea 2 0 1 1 2 4 -2 1

Final Fixtures:

Costa Rica vs Brazil (Wednesday 17 June)

South Korea vs Spain (Wednesday 17 June)

Qualification Status

Brazil have won the group, so the question is who will finish second and third. Spain plays South Korea, and both sides know a win may secure them secure second, and at worst put themselves into contention for the best third spot. With both countries knowing a draw will be terminal, that should produce an open game that will be fascinating for the neutrals.

The other game sees Brazil take on a Costa Rican side that doesn’t know how to give up. Led by Amelia Valverde, who at 28 is the youngest manager ever at a Women’s (or Men) World Cup, who defy their lowly ranking. There are only three countries at this World Cup with a lower ranking, but they have showed an incredible fighting quality – and Karla Villalobos’ equaliser against South Korea is my favourite moment of the World Cup (so far). Brazil has not looked their best, so I won’t be surprised is Costa Rica produce another shock.

Who Will They Face?

Brazil vs Second Group D

Second vs First Group F

Third vs EITHER First Group A or First Group D

Group F

Country P W D L F A GD Pts
Colombia 2 1 1 0 3 1 2 4
England 2 1 0 1 2 2 0 3
France 2 1 0 1 1 2 -1 3
Mexico 2 0 1 1 2 3 -1 1

Final Fixtures:

Mexico vs France (Wednesday 17 June)

England vs Colombia (Wednesday 17 June)

Qualification Status

France favourites to win the group. Right? WRONG. Their shock defeat to Colombia means they face a must-win game against Mexico. No one wants to finish second or third in this group with potential opponents including Germany, Norway, Japan, USA, Australia or Sweden.

The top spot seems to between Colombia and England who play each other in the final game. A draw may be sufficient for France but they will see their game against Mexico as a must win. And if they win, and Colombia and England draw, they will be group winners. But Mexico have shown in their two games that they will pose France problems.

Who Will They Face?

First vs Second Group E

Second vs Second Group B (most likely Germany or Norway)

Third vs EITHER First Group C (most likely Japan) or First Group D
