FULL-TIME Brazil 0-1 Australia
WHAT A SHOCK. Australia win. This is the first time an Australian team, either men’s or women’s, has won a knockout game. Brazil in tears, Australia jubilant. They will either play Japan or Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
Brazil has a free-kick from 40 yards. Marta launches a ball into the box, and Cristiane’s flicked header is saved by Williams. 2 minutes of additional time.
Beatriz and Raquel Fernandes replaces Thaisa and Tamires.
Marta is booked for fouling Kellond-Knight
Oh my, is this the winner? Gorry plays a stunning diagonal pass to de Vanna, unmarked in the box. Her shot is saved by Luciana, but she parries it straight to Simon who converts.
Cristiane shoots from the edge of the box, Williams saves by pushing the ball up and then catching it. 12 minutes left. Tense times
Australia has a free-kick, 25 yards from goal in a central position. What do they do here? A training ground routine is foiled by an offside flag.
Australia has a free-kick on the left-wing. Van Egmond’s delivery is cleared to Gorry, but her shot was never going to hit the target.
Katrina Gorry replaces Tameka Butt.
Brazil have a corner cleared to the edge of the box, but Andressa’s first time shot is always going over.
Australia’s corner is dangerous, but somehow Brazil clear. Alleway is injured trying to compete the ball, but despite being in lots of pain, she seems to be continuing.
Kyah Simon replaces Michelle Heyman
63 mins – CLOSE
Chances at both ends. Andressa’s first corner is cleared behind. Her second picks out Formiga whose header bounces onto the ground and hits the post. Australia clear and launch a counter-attack, as de Vanna breaks into the box, pauses and passes to van Egmond whose shot takes a deflection to send it wide.
Now Brazil cuts open Australia. Cristiane plays a through-ball down the left to Marta who sets herself before shooting, and her powerful shot is well tipped round the post by Williams.
Both sides are struggling to cut open the other, and this is leading to an intriguing game. Cristiane’s shot takes a deflection, but it goes straight to Williams.
Kellond-Knight launches her corner into the box, where Kerr hopefully puts out her foot, and shoots over. Up the other end, Cristiane shoots wide from 20 yards.
Nearly an immediate breakthrough for Brazil in the second half. Cristiane cuts off the left-wing and into the box, beating two defenders, but the ball falls kindly for Tamires who shoots wide of the far-post. Just.
SECOND HALF KICKS-OFF
Brazil gets the second half underway. No changes made.
HALF-TIME Brazil 0-0 Australia
Half-time in an intriguing half which I think Australia have just edged. Worrying signs for both teams as de Vanna and Andressa Alves picking up injuries in a challenge between them.
Brazil keep the ball for a while and Formiga shoots from distance, but itt never had a chance to trouble Williams.
Van Egmond tries her luck from long distance, but her shot hits Monica.
From just outside the box, Andressa shoots, but her shot was always going over.
Heyman tries her luck with a first-time shot from 25 yards, but her effort would be at home in rugby.
Brazil are fortunate. A lovely Australian passing move sees Catley break down the left, she plays a great ball into the box, but it deflects off Monica and into Luciana’s arms.
De Vanna is tormenting Fabiana with her pace, but the Brazilian just manages to win the battle.
33 mins – CLOSE
Kellond-Knight whips a corner into the six-yard box where Kennedy makes a great run but her glancing header hits Fabiana and Brazil can clear.
28 mins – CLOSE & WHAT A SAVE
Formiga steals the ball off van Egmond and shoots from 25 yards, and her shot is dipping in, but Williams makes a superb save to tip the ball over. The corner is played short to Fabiana who picks out Rafaelle, who heads wide.
Foord launches the ball into the box and looks to have picked out Kerr, but Formiga heads the ball of her head and concedes a corner. Australia waste it.
Dev Vanna whips a dangerous deep cross into the box towards Kerr, but Fabiana clears. Then Kerr plays Heyman through, but she is forced wide and doesn’t get a clean contact on her shot.
Tamires makes an overlapping run down the left, and she cuts the ball back into the box, but it passes through several Brazillian players.
Brazil’s corner is cleared and Foord launches a counter, and is brought down by Fabiana on the half-way line who is booked.
Marta whips a ball into Cristiane, but Kennedy makes the interception to clear behind for a corner.
Australia has a corner. Kellond-Knight’s delivery is a good one, and Luciana just gets a hand to it and concedes another corner. The next one falls to Kerr at the far post, and she volleys into the side netting from a narrow angle.
Cristiane wriggles to make room to shot from just outside the box, but her driven shot is straight at Williams who makes the save. The first shot of this game.
A defensive mix-up between Kennedy and Alleway nearly presents Formiga with a chance, but Australia recovers.
Brazil are dominating the possession stats, but have yet to test Williams.
