Netherlands come so close to an equaliser. Spitse’s delivery is dangerous and it hits Sameshima to force Ayumi Kaihori into a great save. Japan can’t clear and van de Ven tries her lucky but her shot is blocked by Mizuho Sakaguchi

Melis’ ball picks out Miedema who can’t manage to turn in the box, she unselfishly sets up van de Ven, but she shoots into the side netting

Japan break quickly and nearly score a second as Miyama’s cut-back hits van Dongen and the ball nearly squirms in, but just goes wide.

What can Netherlands do from this? Spitse’s shot hits the wall, but the Dutch recycle the ball well to win a corner. However, the waste that.

Nearly a sublime second. Sameshima makes a surging run, passes to Shinobu Ohno who makes a dinked through-ball over the centre-backs but from 6-yards out, Sameshima volleys over.

Nahomi Kawasumi plays the ball back across goal, Miyama makes a superb run but sidefoots the ball past the left post.

Netherlands have a corner, van den Berg’s ball is good but Japan clear.

Nearly an immediate reply. Melis puts a tantalising cross into the box, but Miedema and Martens can’t get something on the ball

10 mins – GOAL JAPAN 1-0 Netherlands (Saori Ariyoshi)

Aya Miyama is down the left, she puts in a wonderful cross and Yuki Ogimi’s header hits the cross bar, Merel van Dongen scuffs her clearance to Saori Ariyoshi who fires the ball into the bottom-left corner. That is her first ever goal for Japan, not a bad place to score it.

Manon Melis is in the box, she is about to shoot – but she slips at the worst time.

Good possession from Netherlands see them approach the Japan box, but they can’t open a route into the penalty area and Sherida Spitse tries her luck from 30 yards, but her shot goes narrowly over.
