Scottish Women’s Cup – Quarter-Final Preview

This weekend sees the break in the SWPL with the Quarter-Finals of the Scottish Women’s Cup. Here I look at the ties.

Rangers U20s vs Rangers

Friday 11th September 2015

The unique tie in the round as the Rangers U20s team takes on their first team. Rangers U20s play in the SWFL 2nd Division West/South West and are currently sitting in second place.

Rangers U20s were given a bye into the First Round where they beat Tayside Ladies 7-0. In the Second Round, they caused a shock as they knocked out SWPL side Inverness City by 3-0. In the previous round (Third Round), they beat East Fife 2-0.

The Rangers first team play in the SWPL, but have been in poor form since the mid-season split, losing their last seven matches.

And as the Rangers First Team plays in the SWPL, they were given a bye into the Second Round where they thrashed Forfar Farmington Development 14-0. In the Third Round, Rangers defeated Aberdeen Development 7-1.

Prediction: The Rangers first team will have enough to reach the Semi-Finals.

Cumbernauld Colts vs Hibernian

Friday 11th September 2015

Cumbernauld Colts compete in the SWFL First Division and are sitting in 7th place. But, due to the introduction of the SWPL 2, they only need to finish in the top four to secure their place in the newly created league – and they are only four points behind 4th place.

Cumbernauld narrowly beat Falkirk Ladies 1-0 in the Preliminary Round, before thrashing Riverside 15-1 in the First Round. Their Second Round tie was a tighter affair, as they knocked out Boroughmuir Thistle 1-0. And then in the previous round, they knocked out Edinburgh Caledonia 4-0.

Hibernian is second in the SWPL, pushing Glasgow City all the way for the league title. Last weekend, they suffered their first league defeat of the season against Aberdeen.

In the Second Round, Hibernian knocked out Glasgow City Development 7-0 before knocking out Forfar Farmington 4-0 in the last round.

Prediction: Hibernian will continue their progress in the Scottish Cup.

Glasgow City vs Kilmarnock

Sunday 13th September 2015

Scotland’s most successful side Glasgow City take on the oldest Scottish Women’s Club Kilmarnock. City has won the previous four Scottish Cups and are chasing a fourth successive domestic treble. They are currently top of the SWPL and are unbeaten in all the domestic competitions: having won the 2015 SWP League Cup.

As with all SWPL sides, City entered the competition in the Second Round where they beat fellow SWPL side Spartans 2-0. In the Third Round, they faced another SWPL side Aberdeen who they beat 4-1.

Kilmarnock plays in the SWFL 2nd Division West/South West, and are 2 points behind Rangers U20s. They have won the Scottish Women’s Cup: the first ever as Stewarton Thistle and twice as Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock beat East Fife Violet 11-0 in the Preliminary Round before they beat Hearts Development 2-0 in the First Round. Their progress in the Second Round was a bit harder as they required penalties to beat Mill United. And then in the previous round, they narrowly beat Dee Vale 2-1.

Prediction: You have to expect that Glasgow City will be victorious.

Celtic vs Motherwell

Sunday 13th September 2015

Celtic is sitting in 4th place of the SWPL and with four games remaining are chasing down 3rd placed Aberdeen. However, that ambition was hit two weeks ago as they lost to Aberdeen 3-0.

They had an astonishing Second Round thrashing Dundee City 29-0 before narrowly knocking out Stirling University 2-0 in the last round.

Motherwell is having a successful league campaign in the SWFL 2nd Division South East/West, currently holding top spot – a five point lead over Spartans Reserves with a game in hand.

They beat Dunfermline Athletic 4-1 in the Preliminary Round and then thrashed Aberdeen Reserves 9-1 in the First Round. Motherwell then caused a shock in the Second Round, beating SWPL side Hutchison Vale 4-0. The last tie was an epic tie as they beat Glasgow Girls 4-3.

Prediction: Celtic win.
