Scottish Women's Football

My personal blog on Scottish Women's Football

About

At a recent pub quiz, there was a question:

Which country won the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup without conceding a goal, the first time that had happened?

My gut instinct said Germany, but there was enough doubt gnawing at the back of my mind saying that it had to be the USA. The right answer was Germany, thus I lost money. So the only rational reaction was to start a blog on the subject – what else does a writer do?

I cannot remember a time where I did not love football, despite long knowing I did not have the talent to play professionally – although the NHS will testify I have the ankle injury rate of an English talisman footballer from the 2000s. I vividly remember spending Sunday afternoons lying on the lounge floor, examining the classified results. Car journeys were spent memorising football teams and tables – and never being able to spell Leicester (something age has rectified).

So I would describe myself as a football nerd, and therefore it pains me if I have such a large area of knowledge lacking.

It is a ridiculous fact that women have had to fight just for the right to play football, but since the 2012 Olympics, the profile and interest in women’s football have increased exponentially.

I am coming to women’s football from a position of general ignorance, and although I will occasionally write on football south of the border – my main focus will be on the Scottish game.

Recently, I attended my first women’s football match as Glasgow City lost to PSG in the Champions League Quarter-Final, and I intend on attending several other over the season.

So what can you expect from this blog? I intend to follow the following schedule, although I will deviate from this at times such as the upcoming World Cup.

Mondays: Modern Day Football

As a fan of awesome alliteration, Mondays will be dedicated to what is going on today. The subject matter will vary: from examining specific competitions, match reports or even a tactics or opinion pieces. If there is anything you would like me to write about, please leave a comment.

Fridays: History

I do need to come up with a better title for this, but I want to document the entire (as close as possible) history of women’s football in Scotland – from the British Ladies’ Football Club to Glasgow City. An example of this is here:

Welcome to my blog, comment, subscribe and most of all – enjoy.
